Botanical Study Yarn Club - Brazilia

Welcome to the Botanical Study Yarn Club. With this club we will be exploring various natural dyeing plants creating with them gorgeous, botanically dyed yarns.

This listing is to order this month's colorway Brazilia, dyed with Brazilwood.

Brazilwood (Paubrasilia echinata) is an old world dye, and the first thing I remember from this dye material is that it is the tree that the country of Brazil was named after. It is the national tree of Brazil, and Europeans were impressed by the abundance of it across the coastline. When cut, it revealed a red interior that looked like the glow of an ember. Sadly Brazilwood got heavily exploited during the first colonising centuries up to the 20^th century for its use as a dye and instrument production. The heavy exploitation by the Europeans, almost brought to extinguish this beautiful tree, but thankfully due to regulation set, Brazilwood has been restored and is no longer in danger.

The heartwood of Brazilwood is what is used in natural dyeing and it dyes gorgeous shades of red. I had a small quantity in my stash from when I went to the Natural Dyeing school here in Athens about 8 years ago, and I wanted it to be part of the Botanical Study Club for it’s historic significance.

This month’s club is a limited edition due to my limited availability of this dye, therefore I’m offering the club only in the bases that have been ordered in the three months subscription, plus the new sock base Artemisia.
